BACK COVER COPY:

Canada’s first female journalist, Eve Walker, with the help of Algonquin tracker, Toumo Hansen, and her Salish guide, Big John, race against time to help Heidi Tsan save her brother, Eli, from execution, and to unhinge efforts of those who would take everything from the Tla’amin Nation – their freedom, their land, their lives.

Eli Tomas, the only son of Chief Israel Tomas, is held prisoner in the Vananda Jail, under the ruthless treatment of Captain Red Sutherland, of the British Columbia Provincial Police, on Texada Island, British Columbia. He was arrested for the racially charged murder of his sister’s white husband, Ernie Tsan, an influential labour activist who sought to increase pressure on local mine owners, after a rash of accidents and unexplained deaths. Eli made no secret that he was angry with his sister that, after all they had been through, and in the face of all that would surely come, his sister had married a white man.

After holding a kangaroo court to establish Eli’s guilt, as directed by Sutherland’s long time friend, Judge Everett Noble, the date is set for his execution. Eve and the two trackers make haste, via overland expedition to Lytton, to intercept an entourage of Federal Governors, on tour of the British Columbia interior, and to seek intervention in the trial. They are, as yet, unawares that Sutherland assigned his best man, and a well-supplied outfit, to track them down and arrest them before they can make contact with the Dominion Governors. It is here that famous author and British Secretary to the State, Edward Bulwer Lytton, himself gets involved.

Heidi is swept up in efforts to form an alliance among BC First Nations that quickly threatens to escalate beyond control when a faction of young Tla’amin Salish braves choose the path of violence and war to settle the many travesties that the colonials have laid at their feet.
